Interview on Happyesque

Happyesque, 'a journal of ideas and things', has posted an interview with me: 'Historically speaking about Singapore', in which I ponder whether history is cool, how Singaporeans deal with their history (or not) and how I feel about the poor old Padang. There are also some neat photos of the inside of our book.

Finally finished the book! Argh, it's so soul-crushing to realise how independence made us a much less fertile place. It's hard to imagine a sequel being halfway as interesting.

My dad just finished reading the book as well, but he read the ending a bit differently. In his opinion, the book still proves that LKY was a 'great man' and a true idealist, though (in my father's view) after '65 power clearly corrupted him.
I myself think that such idealism always contained within it a willingness to sacrifice democracy, human rights, freedom of expression, as well as the truth, that can't be separated out from it. The government in Singapore has always had a very narrow definition of the people's welfare. I hope the book shows a little of the vitality that was once there, and now waits to be reclaimed.
